Perseid viewing

Some of us are planning to go to our Hazellbury Plucknet site on Saturday night 11th (weather permitting) to try to catch some Perseids  so why not join us.

Bring a chair or lounger and a blanket or similar to keep warm. A warm drink always helps too. (It can get surprisingly damp  and chilly). Binoculars and ‘scopes would be handy but not essential. The grass has been cut so no machetes needed.  Let’s hope for clear skies!

See you, Ron

  1. Good luck, I saw nine during about forty minutes observing at around midnight while I was down at the field last night (Friday 10thAug12).

    Pete.

  2. You were lucky Pete. I didn’t see a single one from home at around 11 on Friday. Some of us did go to the field tonight (Saturday) but there were only small breaks in the cloud and all we spotted was a satellite or two.

  3. Following a great afternoon at the Norman Lockyer Observatory in Sidmouth, Saturday night looked to be very disappointing as the clouds rolled in. Both Ron and I with my nine year old cousin stood gazing upwards from the field at Hazelbury with the occasional glimpse of a star or passing satellite. By 11pm we decided it was time to head back home – but at least we made the effort. Before heading off home, I dropped my cousin back off to her parents just outside of Crewkerne and the skies cleared. Out came the sun loungers and we counted more than 40 meteors in about an hour! Not only that, we had a most wonderful display of lightening! I eventually tucked myself into bed just before 2am.

  4. The great British weather!! Just before Lorna and Eleanor arrived, myself Andrew Jones and family were at the field but had decided to pack up as it had started to rain. Delighted that Lorna and keen young stargazer Eleanor got to see those Perseids though. Well done you two!
