April meeting

Thursday, April 16th, 2015

It was good to welcome our visitors! Hope you enjoyed the meeting,

We actually managed to get outside for some observing and having some fun watching and imaging the ISS as it went over. It was a laugh watching Lorna’s excitement when she discovered that she’d caught the ISS for the first time on her new fancy camera. Nice one Lorna. Meanwhile Bill’s all sky camera was picking up all sorts.
Before all that though, there was Bud’s ‘Back to basics’ talk which was entertaining as well as instructive. This was followed by Arthur’s sky notes for May. We had to wait until the viewing session was over before being treated to Bob Mizon’s ‘Object of the month’ Hydra; needless to say, the wait was well worthwhile!

Thanks to all contributors and to Zena and her merry band for yet again providing our monthly feast. Thanks too to the sweeper uppers who valiantly cleared all the grass we had tramped in to the hall from the field. Great job.
Next month’s talk is on eclipses. Should be a good one!

March meeting

Thursday, March 19th, 2015

Another enjoyable and instructive evening! Thanks to Bob Mizon for his excellent presentation on 7 Moons. Not that Bob confined us to those 7. His account of the other moon-like objects out there was as usual, fascinating.
Quite coincidentally, Bob’s object of the month the constellation Monoseros, coincided with Arthur’s selected constellation for his monthly sky notes and some of  Bill Read’s great images including the Christmas tree and Cone nebulae  and Barnard’s variable nebula .Spooky!
Ron shared a lucky recently taken  H alpha image of a solar post flare loop.

Thanks to Zena and all who helped with refreshments and the all important kitchen duties.

If you have any ‘beginners’ questions’ don’t forget to let me have them, or you can bring them to the next meeting. Bud’s session next month will have a back to basics theme which I know will be of interest to many. Please feel free to bring any equipment you need a hand with.

Bruton School for Girls

Tuesday, March 10th, 2015

Mike, Bud, Chris and Ron enjoyed an astronomy evening with children and parents of Bruton School for Girls today. The skies could have been clearer but with Jupiter and moons to view and a few other sights, a good time was had by all. It was interesting to see how well some of the pupils did with their efforts at eyepiece photography with their mobiles. They got some impressive shots of Jupiter with four moons.

Thanks to Steve Brown from the school for inviting us.

February ’15 meeting.

Thursday, February 19th, 2015

First, it was great to welcome so many new visitors. Thanks for coming along and we hope to see you again next time.

Our own home grown speaker Bill Reed’s talk on the solar system was just the ticket and it’s clear we’ve found another media star in the making. Thanks Bill, great talk and a revision session that was greatly enjoyed.

Thanks too, to Arthur Davis for his monthly sky notes for March. These will be on our website near the end of this month.

Well done to Earnest Staines for making the parallelogram mount for his ‘bins. Great job. Thanks for the pictures Earnest. No more stiff necks for you, then. :-)

As usual we ended with members’ images and a hilarious video of an amazing flying machine/rocket  which defies description.

Next month, Bob Mizon’s talk will be ’7 Moons’. Which ones will he choose? Come along to find out.
